Fans have been looking at Todd Phillips’ new Joker film starring Joaquin Phoenix for months now, trying to find clues that they can tie to previous stories from DC comics. Well, Phillips sat down with Empire Magazine about the film and he wants you all to stop, because there’s nothing there. The director went on to say that he’s expecting to piss off some die-hard fans along the way because he’s probably not doing the movie many of them were expecting. Here’s what he told Empire:
“We didn’t follow anything from the comic-books, which people are gonna be mad about. We just wrote our own version of where a guy like Joker might come from. That’s what was interesting to me. We’re not even doing Joker, but the story of becoming Joker. It’s about this man.”
Personally, I’m up for something new with The Joker and I’m excited to see Warner Bros embracing the idea of an Elseworlds style film that doesn’t have any impact on their existing film franchises. I just worry that, if the film does well, this version of the Joker will be shoe-horned in by producers.
