Pee-Wee Herman’s been looking for a come back, and it appears that he’s caught the eye of Judd Apatow.
For those who may not be in the know, Paul Reubens (Pee-Wee) has been performing in a live stage show at the Nokia theater to revive and jump start developments on “Pee-Wee’s Playhouse: The Movie.” While Reubens been enjoying some sold out success, he really caught the eye of Judd Apatow who attended the show. They meet and a few meetings later, Apatow will has agreed to produce a new “Pee-Wee” film.
This is what Apatow had to say:
“Let’s face it, the world needs more Pee-wee Herman. I am so excited to be working with Paul Reubens — who is an extraordinary and groundbreaking actor and writer. It’s so great to watch him return with such relevance.”
Currently the film is being set up at Universal Pictures, and Reubens will join writer/actor Paul Rust (Inglourious Basterds, I Love You, Beth Cooper) in penning the script. Apatow is not expected to direct but will be producing the project through his Apatow Prods. banner.
Here’s what a very humbled Reubens had to say about Apatow’s involvement:
“There is no one like Judd in our business — he loves comedy with emotion and heart, and he sees what we do as art. I can’t believe I’m getting this opportunity to be working with him.”
I can’t wait to see how this story goes. Because realistically, Reubens’ shot for another Pee-Wee film was next-to-none. But to now to be gifted with this opportunity and backing, it’s almost like a rebirth for the man who entertained children throughout the mid ’80s.
Reubens is expected to take the “Pee-Wee Herman Show” to Broadway in October later this year.
