While many animation purists found the live-action remake of Disney’s Lion King to be heresy, the box office is boss. In the US, the film made over $500 million and its total global haul was over $1.66 billion, making it the seventh highest-grossing film of all time. So, you know Disney is going to have to make a sequel… or a prequel in this case. Interestingly… the “live-action” film is now considered to be the highest-grossing animated film of all time… because CGI isn’t real, no matter what Disney tries to tell you.
In the new film, we’ll be looking back at the early days of Mufasa and Taka (Scar) and now we know that Kelvin Harrison Jr. & Aaron Pierre are taking on their roles respectively. Harrison is best known for Waves and The Trial of the Chicago 7, while Pierre is best known for his role in The Underground Railroad.
According to the report from Deadline, Moonlight director, Barry Jenkins will be taking over for Jon Favreau on the sequel and the film’s score will be coming to us from Hans Zimmer, Pharrell, and Succession’s Nicholas Britell.
