It would be quite an understatement to say that George Lucas’ live-action “Star Wars” TV series has been in development for a very long time. And as much as we want to report new news, according to producer Rick McCallum, the series is going to be delayed for another three to four years. According to McCallum, the delay is a strategic move because there is a lot of digital animation that needs to be done and Lucas is waiting for technology to catch up to them so the series can be done not only right, but within budget.
In an interview with Czech Position, McCallum spoke about the series and provided new information about what fans can look forward to in the future particularly an explanation of the ambition they have for the series:
We have 50 hours of third-draft scripts, but the problem we have is there is a lot of digital animation; we don’t have the technology yet to be able to do them at a price that is safe for television. Since we would be financing them, it would be suicide for us to do this… So we are going to wait three or four years.
Additionally, and perhaps the most interesting development. McCallum describes the series as being like “The Godfather,” only, it takes place in a galaxy far far away.
Basically, it is like The Godfather; it’s the Empire slowly building up its power base around the galaxy, what happens in Coruscant, which is the major capital, and it’s a group of underground bosses who live there and control drugs, prostitution.]
This sounds like the definitive “Star Wars” series fans have been waiting for decades. We’ve already been waiting for about six years, what’s another four? Done right or not done at all. Calendar marked, I’ll be waiting.
