CBS has signed Lucy Liu (Charlies Angels, Kill Bill) to play Watson in CBS’s new modern day retelling of Sherlock Holmes titled “Elementary.”
Liu will star opposite to Jonny Lee Miller (Hackers, Dexter) was was cast last week as Sherlock.
In its modern spin on the detective, Sherlock will be portrayed as a recovering addict who takes on cases in present day New York City as a consultant to the NYPD.
Liu’s character will be reimagined as Joan Watson, a former surgeon who becomes a trusted friend to Holmes and looks after him.
The casting of a female Watson may be startling for some, but this all but guarantees that CBS are trying hard to differentiate their series from the highly regarded British “Sherlock,” which stars Benedict Cumberbatch.
