M. Night Shyamalan recently let slip, and by let slip I mean self-whoring, that he’s interested in making a sequel to his superhero homage surprise hit “Unbreakable.” There’s been a lot of talk about it possibly spawning a sequel, but that was all it was until now.
According to Shyamalan, “Unbreakable 2” would be a part of his Night Chronicles film. What does this mean? It means their ideas that Shyamalan comes up with but are written and directed by someone else so they don’t end up sucking. The upcoming thriller “Devil,” is said example and marks the first of Shyamalan’s Night Chronicle films.
In an interview with MTV, Shyamalan reveals more information about both “Unbreakable 2” and Night Chronicle films:
I cannibalized the idea for the sequel to ‘Unbreakable’ for one of the ‘Night Chronicles,'” revealed Shyamalan.
It was such a cool idea for a villain, and it was actually originally in the script for ‘Unbreakable,’ and it was too much,” he said of his reasons for excising the element that was intended to become “Unbreakable 2.” “There were too many villains, so I pulled this villain out and was like, ‘I’ll make this the second flick.’
However, as the filmmaker got caught up in other projects and “Unbreakable 2″ became less likely, the seed of that idea still managed to grow.
I fleshed it out more and more, and thought, ‘This could be a standalone movie,'” he said. “I’ll just say it: the third ‘Night Chronicles’ movie is what would have been the sequel [to ‘Unbreakable’]. So now I need to come up with a new idea.
If all goes according to plan, “Unbreakable 2” would become the first sequel Shyamalan’s ever come up with. However with his recent track record, do we really want to see another Shyamalan film of utter soul crushing disappointment? What do you think? Let me know!
