A year ago, no one was really thinking about a fourth Matrix film. A reboot maybe, but definitely not a sequel. Now we are sitting here, waiting for production to resume on the half-filmed new chapter to one of the most successful and culturally significant movie franchises in the last couple of generations. At the center of the film are Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, who have returned to play Neo and Trinity. So, was it just the money that brought them back, or was it something else? In a new interview with Empire, the pair spill the beans on what made them put the leather back on and jack back into the Matrix.
Here’s what Reeves had to say:
“Lana Wachowski wrote a beautiful script and a wonderful story that resonated with me,” he says. “That’s the only reason to do it. To work with her again is just amazing. It’s been really special, and the story has, I think, some meaningful things to say, and that we can take some nourishment from.”
And, here’s what made Moss come back:
“I never thought that it would happen. It was never on my radar at all. When it was brought to me in the way that it was brought to me, with incredible depth and all of the integrity and artistry that you could imagine, I was like, ‘This is a gift.’ It was just very exciting.”
