Dimension Films has hired Matt Lieberman to pen the new “Short Circuit” reboot that will be directed by Tim Hill (Hop).
Not much s known about this unnecessary reboot other than the fact that it will be a reimagining of the 1986 family film, which followed an experimental military robot “Johnny Five” who develops self-awareness after being hit by lightning.
The reboot for “Short Circuit” has gained a lot of momentum recently when Hill was hired to direct back in August. David Foster, who produced the original, will return to produce along with Ryan E. Heppe, John Hyde, and Brian Manis. Production is slated to begin at the end of the year, for a scheduled 2013 summer release.
“Dimension has had great success with the ‘Spy Kids’ family series which grossed over $500 million worldwide,” said Bob Weinstein, co-chairman of the Weinstein Co. “We are looking for ‘Short Circuit’ to be our next family franchise.”
