A week ago it was announced for the first time ever that DC/Vertigo’s insanely controversial Preacher was going to see fruition as it was going to be helmed under the watchful eye of established (Road to Perdition) director Sam Mendes. Comic fans were elated and message boards filled with chatter bringing new life to the discussion of who should play Custer and his Irish Vampire pal Cassidy.
All this may have been for naught however, as in a recent interview with Empire, Mendes explains, “Basically they should have written, ‘Mendes in development with PREACHER’. What I’m doing is, I’ve gotta find a script. I’ve just got to get it written.”
What this means is, while Mendes is still on the project, it is very early in its development with the potential to see be axed later down the line if things don’t pan out particularly with the script or even a change of heart by the studio.
The good news however, Mendes believes in Preacher’s potential, calling it “brilliant” and “incredible.” He is excited about the project and cannot wait to begin.
Preacher is a 75-issue comic written by Garth Ennis and illustrated by Steve Dillon. It follows the story of a Texas preacher who becomes infused with supernatural “God-like” powers and decides to track down God and make him accountable for crimes against humanity. On this journey he is joined by his girlfriend assassin, Tulip and an Irish vampire named Cassidy.
