Microsoft Windows 8 To Charge For Ability To Play DVDs And Blu-Ray On Computer

Wow! We haven’t seen a move this brilliant from Microsoft since The Zune… or Window ME… or Windows Vista… This is a pretty mind-blowing move for a company who is continually losing market share to Apple, the kings of media. Well, I guess if they wanted to show how different they are, what better way than to make media inaccessible?

Deadline Hollywood’s Nikki Finke is reporting that even if your lap top has a DVD or Blu-Ray drive, the next generation of Microsoft Windows 8 won’t automatically play the discs. For that, you’ll have to purchase a stand alone copy of Windows Media Player.

As someone who hasn’t used Windows Media Player in several years, I’m not super worried about this. However, there is a large portion of the population who is going to get bent over prison style over this obnoxiously greedy move by Microsoft.
