NYMag had a recent interview with mixed martial arts fighter Gina Carano, star of “Haywire,” and the topic of playing Carano possibly playing Wonder Woman came up. Here’s what she had to say:
“We even had a Wonder Woman reference in the film — did you catch it? One of the cops said something to me like, ‘Oh, chill out, Wonder Woman.’ And I thought that was so funny. I said to Steven, ‘You know there’s a little rumor about me and Wonder Woman.’ And he said mischievously, ‘Oh, that’s interesting.'”
While Carano would like to play the Amazon, she insists that she’d want the character to be more believable referencing “Hancock” as the type of hero she’d want to portray.
“One of my favorite superhero movies is Hancock — did you see it? If they could do a superhero movie in a more realistic fashion where you could actually believe in it, I would be up for that. It could still be playful, but that’s what I’m representing — the fighting would be real. More than anything, I would want Wonder Woman to be believable, you know?”
It’s easy to see why Carano might be in the running to play Wonder Woman, especially if “Haywire” becomes a box office success, but I’m not sure if she’d be a good Wonder Woman after her statement. The character has always been fantasy and mythical based, and wanting her to be like Hancock would be a mistake. Moreover, I haven’t seen “Haywire” yet so I can’t comment on her acting. If WB does decide to make Wonder Woman, I see it being a franchise. I guess the question remains, is Carano able to carry a franchise. Guess we’ll just have to see.
