Deadline is reporting that the Tony Award winning Broadway musical, Monty Python’s Spamalot has just been acquired for a big-screen adaptation by Paramount. The new film will be directed by Casey Nicholaw off a script by Eric Idle.
The interesting thing about this news is that Spamalot is pretty much a musical retelling of Monty Python and The Holy Grail. So, what we have here is a musical film adaptation of a Broadway musical that was an adaptation of a movie. A movie adaptation had been in the work at FOX, but planning had ground to a halt when Disney purchased the studio. Their loss will definitely be Paramount’s gain.
In 2005, Spamalot burst onto the scene with Tony Award wins for best musical, best director, and Best Performance by a featured actor (Sarah Ramirez as The lady of the Lake). Check out this performance from the Tony Awards that not only features Ramirez, but also features Tim Curry as King Arthur and David Hyde Pierce as Sir Richard.
