It wasn’t too long ago that we were groaning about Sony’s big screen adaptation of the classic 1980s cartoon, “The Smurfs.” But with the leaked CGI Smurf and news of Neil Patrick Harris starring as a live-action character, things suddenly began to look up.
So now here we are, with more Smurf news today, and this time with voice casting! A slew of actors have been cast to provide the voices of the Smurfs themselves. According to Variety, Alan Cumming and George Lopez, are set to voice Gutsy Smurf and Grouchy Smurf respectively. Meanwhile, comedian Jonathan Winters will provide the voice as Papa Smurf, the original role donned by Don Messick. But that’s not all, lastly singer/artist Katy Perry is also currently in talks to tackle the role of Smurfette, the only female Smurf in the entire Smurf community. Sadly she will not have any girls to kiss unless she’s kissing herself in the mirror.
Directed by “Scooby-Doo” director Raja Gosnell, “The Smurfs” is tentatively set for release on July 29, 2011.
