Awards season is beginning and the National Board of Review just released their list of winners for 2011. For the first time in their history, a 3D film has been named the best movie of the year. Hugo took the prize and the film’s director, Martin Scorsese was named the best director of the year.
A couple of the great awards that won’t get top line mention are the spotlight award, given to Michael Fassbender for his work on A Dangerous Method, Jane Eyre, Shame, X-Men: First Class and a special award for achievement in film making for the Harry Potter series.

Best Adapted Screenplay: Alexander Payne and Nat Faxon & Jim Rash, The Descendants
Best Animated Feature: Rango
Breakthrough Performance: Felicity Jones, Like Crazy
Breakthrough Performance: Rooney Mara, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Debut Director: J.C. Chandor, Margin Call
Best Ensemble: The Help
Spotlight Award: Michael Fassbender (A Dangerous Method, Jane Eyre, Shame, X-Men: First Class)
NBR Freedom of Expression: Crime After Crime
NBR Freedom of Expression: Pariah
Best Foreign Language Film: A Separation
Best Documentary: Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory
