Netflix’s New ‘Saint Seiya’ Remake Angers Fans and LGBT Community

Netflix’s new ” Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac” trailer which they just dropped has angered fans of the classic anime along with the LGTBQ+ community.

Much of this has to do with an unexpected change to the source material. Andromeda Shun, a prominent main character has been changed from a man to a woman. The original character was interpreted by many as a gay icon due to his feminine mannerisms and emotionally open personality.

When asked about the change, show writer Eugene Son stated that the show needed female representation. Ironically this move for diversity and inclusiveness undermines the queer subtext of the original especially when Andromeda was selected as the character to be made into a woman.

The new Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac be available on Netflix for streaming starting July 19th.

Knights of the Zodiac: Saint Seiya follows modern day adventures of young warriors called “Knights”, who are sworn protectors of the reincarnated Greek goddess Athena. Each Knight wears a powerful armor based on their chosen zodiac constellation, and are called Knights of the Zodiac. They aid Athena in her battle against powerful Olympian gods who are bent on destroying the humankind.”
