The last time that The Muppets tried their hand at a TV series, it didn’t go too well. Somewhere between the pitch about a ‘behind the scenes’ show based around ‘The Muppet Show’ that we’ve all come to know and love, and the Miss Piggy talk show filled with relationship drama, Kermit’s mid-life crisis, and Fozzie dating a human, things got a little confused and the show didn’t make it past season one.
Almost a year ago, it was announced that we’d be getting a new series from our felt friends on the upcoming Disney + streaming network. Now, news about the show is breaking thanks to The Splash Report, and it looks like we are in for something that will at least be interesting.
Here’s what we now know:
1. The show is going to be produced by Josh Gad and ABC’s Once Upon a Time creators Edward Kitsis & Adam Horowitz.
2. The show will take place in the universe of Muppets Take Manhatten and will be set shortly after the events of the 1984 film. If this is accurate, it would make the show a period piece, set in the 80’s. While that could be a lot of fun and make for great musical guests and jokes for Gen X’ers, it sounds like an added expense that I’d be surprised if Disney is willing to take on.
3. The current plot of the show involves the Muppets disbanding shortly after ‘Manhattan’, but then regrouping when they must band together and solve the mystery of Rowlf the Dog’s disappearance. This is actually a big bummer as it means that we’ll not be getting nearly enough Rowlf in the show as we want.
4. The current title of the show is: Muppets Live Another Day.
It is unclear as to whether Gad will be starring in the series or just serving as a producer behind the scenes. We’ll probably get our first look and a whole lot more details sometime between now and August’s D23 Disney Convention.
