It’s pretty rare that you get a movie trailer clocking in at almost fives minutes. Generally, the fear is that you are giving away too much of the movie’s big moments and story beats. However, this does not appear to be something that concerns the folks behind ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’. Funny, this is my second post of the day and it’s the second one about a movie that probably didn’t need to get made, but producers and studios saw what they thought was an easy pay day. Well, at least it’s a straight up sequel and not another freakin reboot.
Independence Day was a great movie. It was cheesy as hell, but that was a big part of it’s charm. It was filled with patriotism and rah rah Americaness that justified the title and made the movie a perennial July 4th favorite on cable stations across the country. This movie is coming out in a different time. Notice the UN trucks in the trailer. While that might help boost it even higher at the international box office, it could definitely hurt it in the US.
Also, It’s just really hard to buy that the earth could survive an object the size of the Atlantic Ocean entering our atmosphere.
We always knew they were coming back. After ‘Independence Day’ redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.
