Empire Magazine has given us a real treat today with a few new images from David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, as well as some tidbits from Jared Leto about his time as The Joker.
As many people remember, Heath Ledger let himself go so deeply into his portrayal of the role that he ended up with nightmares and trouble sleeping. It looks like Jared went pretty far down the rabbit hole as well.
“There was definitely a period of…detachment. I took a pretty deep dive. But this was a unique opportunity and I couldn’t imagine doing it another way. It was fun, playing those psychological games. But at the same time it was very painful, like giving birth out of my prick hole.”
On the evolution of the character, one of the film’s producers has this to say:
“More social…a very successful and smart businessman besides being a sociopath.”
Meanwhile, the film’s director, David Ayers’ had this:
“The Joker is the third rail of comic book movies. There’s a power to that character, and by some freaking miracle, through the incredible things Jared has done and the photography and all the other millions of things that went into it, we’ve cooked up something transcendent. He’s scary.”
Along with Jared Leto, Suicide Squad also stars Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Jay Hernandez as El Diablo, Adam Beach as Slipnknot, Karen Fukuhara as Katana, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. The film opens August 5, 2016.
