GK Films announced a few weeks ago that they had acquired the rights to “Tomb Raider” and were interested in rebooting the franchise for the big screen. Graham King is on board to produce and he’s been working with “Iron Man” screenwriters Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby to develop the film, which is still in very early stages.
According to a recent interview given by King, we can expect the reboot to be an origin story.
“Listen, the box office, they weren’t disasters but I find it interesting that the story that we’re telling is really the story before she became Lara Croft, so it is a character piece,” says King.
He goes on to say that the film will be different than the original “Tomb Raider” films, which starred Angelia Jolie.
“It does have a lot of really great characters, but it’s a lot of action and a lot of fun, and for me, it’s something very different. I’ve not really done a movie like that before, but I really gravitated to rebooting this franchise and we’re going to give it a shot.”
The one complaint I always had was that the films were more action and less tomb raiding. I always expected Lara to be sort of a female Indian Jones and the film would heavily take place either in the dessert or the jungles deep in the heart of Peru or something. Hopefully GK Films shares the same sentiments and is able to revive the franchise.
The new series is set for a two-episode premiere, June 4 on Disney+.
