News – ‘The Mandalorian’ Fires Gina Carano

On screen, Gina Carano’s Cara Dune was a fan favorite on the Disney+ Star Wars series, The Mandalorian. However, off screen, her opinions on social media sparked a months long debate over whether she she should be booted from the series. As of just a couple of hours ago, it looks like Disney and Lucasfilm have made their decision on how to proceed.

i09 has now shared the following statement from Lucasfilm:

“Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future. Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”

The move puts Jon Favreau and Disney in a tough spot. Along with her increasingly important role in The Mandalorian, it was also rumored that Carano was set to lead the upcoming spin-off, Rangers of the New Republic, as well as a possible additional series based entirely off of her character.

Will Disney re-cast the role or kill off the character? There’s already a large fan campaign brewing for Lucy Lawless to be cast in the role, which would be great, but Carano is 38 and Lawless is 52. There is a strong question as to whether she can still handle the type of action roles that she did as Xena the Warrior Princess.

It will also be interesting to see how fans react over the next few days. Will this increase support for the already popular series, or will there be a backlash from fans who wanted her to stay on the show?
