Like the stones in the Infinity Gauntlet, Disney has worked hard to bring all of their licenses home, but Sony is holding on to the Spider-Man license tighter than an eyeball being smuggled in Rocket’s butt. The good news is that, for the most part, Sony seems to have finally dialed in the best way to handle all of their Spider-man goodness, even if that means they’ve needed help from Marvel Studios along the way. With 2 critically acclaimed Spider films (one of which took the Oscar for best-animated feature – Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse) and all three of their last spider-films being more than profitable, they are expanding. On the movie side, we know that Venom 2 is happening and that Morbius the Living Vampire is currently filming with Jared Leto in the lead. There is also talk that the Black Cat and Silver Sable films may eventually happen… but don’t hold your breath.
That brings us to today’s announcement that Lego movie masterminds and the original directors of Solo: A Star Wars Story have left their gig at 20th Century Fox (now owned by Disney) and have joined up with Sony to oversee all of their Marvel TV projected. THR has stated that the new, five-year deal will see them creating and developing comedy and drama projects for broadcast, cable, and streaming as well as supervising other writers’ projects. The deal covers both their own works as well as any and all new TV projects based around Sony’s Marvel assets. What does this mean? It means that any of the Spider-Man properties that Sony owns could be coming to the small screen, and if they do, Lord and Miller will have their fingerprints on it.
This is actually a very exciting deal. Their personalities seem to fit perfectly with the sensibilities of Spider-Man, and they may feel like they have something to prove against Disney and Marvel, which could help push them further.
