At the recent Trek convention in Las Vegas, actor Walter Koenig who played psi-cop Alfred Bester (Chekhov from Star Trek) mentioned how the popular sci-fi series “Babylon 5” might be resurrected as a new series or a featured film.
It turns out apparently that “Babylon 5” creator J. Michael Straczynski is interested in securing the rights to the series and rebooting it again.
Here’s what Koenig had to say:
“[J Michael Straczynski] told me that he is in negotiations to re-acquire the rights to Babylon 5 and it looks pretty good. Now what that portends I am not entirely sure. It could be a new series or it could be a feature film, but he was quite animated about it. He seemed very excited and Warner Brothers is dealing with him in good faith. So you might see another Babylon 5 in the not too distant future.”
For now, I’d consider this pipedreams but it bring some hope to B5 fans who’ve been through B5 withdraw since 2007 when the “Lost Tales” was released straight to DVD. Straczynski always expressed interest in adapting B5 to the big screen, so the chances of that happening is more plausible. But again, I wouldn’t hold my breathe. We’ll have more as it develops.
