When Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone shared the screen in Crazy Stupid Love, it felt like we were looking at one of those classic Hollywood pairings that deserved to be together. It’s taken five years, but it looks like I’m getting my wish with the upcoming film, La La Land. What’s even better is that they aren’t just doing any movie together. La La Land is a full on musical and it was created by Damien Chazelle, the man behind Whiplash.
As one could expect from the title, the movie is a love story, set in Los Angeles, between Gosling’s musician character and Stone’s struggling actress. This first look at the film is not only visually stunning, but it evokes a feeling that you really only get by watching the classic musicals of the big studio era.
The first trailer from the film features Gosling singing the first song from the soundtrack, “City of Stars.” It’s more than enough to get me excited about the movie, and even more excited about the concept of a new musical film that isn’t just another live action remake or Broadway adaptation.
Along with Gosling and Stone, the film will also feature John Legend, Rosemarie DeWitt, Finn Wittrock, Callie Hernandez, Sonoya Mizuno, Jessica Rothe, Tom Everett Scott, and Josh Pence. The film hits theaters on December 16th.
Here’s the official synopsis for La La Land:
Written and directed by Academy Award® nominee Damien Chazelle, LA LA LAND tells the story of Mia [Emma Stone], an aspiring actress, and Sebastian [Ryan Gosling], a dedicated jazz musician, who are struggling to make ends meet in a city known for crushing hopes and breaking hearts. Set in modern day Los Angeles, this original musical about everyday life explores the joy and pain of pursuing your dreams.
