Legendary Films held their first ever Comic-Con panel for Guillermo Del Toro’s “Pacific Rim,” and the panel featured talents that included Guillermo del Toro, Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Charlie Day and writer Travis Beacham.
For those who’ve been in the dark, “Pacific Rim” is Del Toro’s new monster/robot film project set in the future where malevolent creatures threaten earth, and the planet has banded together to develop robots to fight off these creatures. From the sound of it, it’s your basic Ultraman X Godzilla story.
Disappointingly, no footage or concept art was shown at the panel as the film is in very early development. Although we do get our first look at the logo.
From the panel we learn that the idea for “Pacific Rim” began as an idea from screenwriter Beachman, who realizes that his favorite movie of all time had not yet been made.
Del Toro was immediately attracted to the project and not because of the monsters or the robots, but rather the how and why of the monsters.
“What if? What would happen in the real world if a big twenty-five story thing came out of the sea and started destroying cities? How would the world change? What weapons do we need to develop to fight a thing like that?”
He was also extremely pleased to have been able to cast the actors from a fan perspective rather than being forced to cast big name stars. He praises Legendary for trusting him and calls his actors a “dream come true.”
Lastly, we also learned that the film will have “the finest fucking monsters ever committed to the screen. And the greatest fucking robots ever committed to screen.”
That’s a pledge, according to Del Toro, who guarantees us that we will see giant things destroy little things.
I’ll be honest, “Pacific Rim” was never on my radar, but after listening to Del Toro talk about the project and the passion I know he always puts into his film, “Pacific Rim” has turned into a film I’m looking the most forward to. Honestly, it’s a geek film made by a geek for geeks. What’s not to like?
“Pacific Rim” is set to open summer of 2013.
