Sesame Street has never been one to shy away from the tough subjects. In the early 80’s they tackled death with the passing of their own Mr. Hooper, and over the years they have tackled everything from HIV, to homelessness, hunger, and autism. Now, the Children’s Television Workshop is tackling the US’ Opioid crisis.
It’s easy to poke fun at puppets getting serious and talking about drug abuse, but this is a really good thing. For far too many children, living in a home where at least one person is addicted to opioids is a reality, but it is something that they often feel like they have to keep secret and shoulder alone.
On a far less serious note… when the hell did Elmo get a dad?!?
Together with children, watch these conversations between Salia and Karli, whose parents have had the same problem. Ask children, “Who are some friends or trusted adults you can talk to?” Sesame Street in Communities brings free video content of everyone’s favorite, furry Muppet friends as they help children and the adults in their lives reach their highest potential. Grover and the gang will tackle a variety of topics that face children in the areas of health and well-being, school readiness, and emotional well-being. Some of the content and topics presented are more sensitive, so you should preview these videos before sharing with a child.
