So far, the reception to the new Ghostbusters film has been… well, it’s made the reviews of BvS seem positive. But, the film is happening, and we really should wait to see the movie before we completely condemn it on the basis of the trailer (even if it was really not funny).
As you may recall, Slimer is really only one of many ghosts featured in the original film. It wasn’t until he took off in the merchandising that he became the mascot of the “Real Ghostbusters” cartoon, and then he took it over completely when they changed the name to “Slimer and the Real Ghostbusters.” Also, let’s not forget the fact that he had his own beverage in Ecto-Cooler. So, because this film is banking on nostalgia to earn it’s opening box office, it sort of makes sense that they’d make sure to include the little snot ball as much as they could. We’ve already seen him in the much maligned trailer. Now, he’s getting an entire cover from Empire Magazine. It is important to mention, this is a variant cover. There’s also a version that includes the new cast of Kristin Wiig, Melissa Mcarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones. What doesn’t make sense is why they didn’t take the space to show off some of their fancy new ghosts. That is, unless Slimer is the big bad?
Also, has anyone noticed that they seem to have made Slimber friendlier looking than he did in the original movie. He looks more like a CGI version of the cartoon iteration.
Here’s the original film Slimer for comparison:
Erin Gilbert (Wiig) and Abby Yates (McCarthy) are a pair of unheralded authors who write a book positing that ghosts are real. A few years later Gilbert lands a prestigious teaching position at Columbia University, but her book resurfaces and she is laughed out of academia. Gilbert reunites with Yates and others when ghosts invade Manhattan and she and her team have to save the world.
