Sony Pictures Acquired Films Rights To ‘Assassin’s Creed’

Sony Pictures is in final negotiations to adapt and distribute a film based on the popular Ubisoft video game “Assassin’s Creed.” According to a report by Variety, the studio has won the film rights after a bidding war when Ubisoft tried to shop the property.

Jean de Rivieres, Ubisoft’s senior VP of international marketing and distribution had this to say in an earlier statement:

“Our strategy is not to diversify but to bolster the appeal of our franchises — that’s why we want to make sure our films will reflect the brands accurately and consolidate our fan base while expanding beyond the games’ primary target audience.”

Unlike most video games, “Assassin’s Creed” is a game with an elaborate and deep mythology. So off the bat it provides plenty of potential for a series of films similar to CAPCOM’s “Resident Evil.” “Assassin’s Creed” would represent just one of many video games currently being adapted by Sony, as they also own the rights to “Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune,” and “inFAMOUS.” Do I trust video game movie knowing their history of unsuccessful transition? Not particularly, but at least with Sony I know it’ll be in good hands.

For fans of the video game series, the fourth installment in the franchise, “Assassin’s Creed: Revelations” is set to hit the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC on November 15th.
