In an exclusive interview with Sci FI Wire, Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese co-writers of the upcoming “Zombieland” confirmed that Sony’s “Venom” Spider-Man spinoff is still moving forward.
According to Wernick, the writing team has just turned in the script to Sony are now awaiting its fate. “We’ve written two drafts of Venom, and the studio has it, and they’re pushing forward in whatever ways they push forward.”
When asked about when “Venom” will be going into production, Wernick had this to say, “We’re not sure, [but] we’ve turned in our two drafts.”
The biggest concern right now is with the tapering of quality with the Spider-Man franchise which has fallen into the realms of “Batman and Robin” with the third chapter being particularly awful and the bastardization of everyone’s favorite Spidey’s arch-nemesis and brain-eating Venom.
As of now it’s uncertain whether the Venom movie might debut before Spider-Man 4 which was recently announced to begin shooting by early 2010. When asked about the relationship between the two movies, Wernick was tight-lipped. “We can’t really talk about that, unfortunately,” the writer said before adding, “Basically, the studio and Marvel and the Arads are taking our drafts and going beyond and figuring out what’s the next step.”
