Spielberg is riding high right now. Sure, he might not have gotten a best director nomination for The Post, but enough people are pissed about it that he’ll still go down as directing one of the best films of the year. Meanwhile, he’s getting ready to unleash his live screen adaptation of Ready Player One on a world full of geeks (myself included), who can’t wait to see it. The big question is, what’s next?
At 71, the ET and Jaws director is showing no sign of slowing down. In fact, his next two projects have just been named and they are anything but easy projects. First up, we will see him return to the land of whips and fedoras for a fifth Indian Jones film, starring Harrison Ford. The good news for him is that the bar for making people happy has been set incredibly low after Indiana Jones and The Crystal Skull. The bad news is that it’s going to be hard to get fans back after that disaster. The latest installment is slated for a July 10, 2020 release date, ten years after Crystal Skull hit theaters and a full 37 years since Ford first donned his trademark fedora in Raiders of The Lost Ark.
Once he’s wrapped on that, he’ll be diving into a remake of Leonard Bernstein/ Stephen Sondheim’s West Side Story. In fact, as of today, an open casting call has gone out in search of the next Tony and Maria, as well as all manner of Sharks and Jets. Though, while it is possible that we could see complete unknowns in the cast, industry insiders are betting that Baby Driver star, Ansel Elgort is a lock for the role of Tony, if he wants it.
