Over the last couple of years, Star Wars has largely become a small-screen affair. Fans have loved The Mandalorian and the Mandalorian episodes of Boba Fett. Obi-Wan left fans wanting, and Andor is better than expected, but seems to be flying under the radar at the moment. The problem is that Star Wars is a movie franchise and there’s really nothing big on the radar to continue the story that started 45 years ago. Now a new article from THR is shedding light on the current future plans for the next Star Wars trilogy set in a Post Rise Of Skywalker World and heralded in by Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof.
The new project from Lindelof already has a director on board by way of Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who directed two episodes of Ms. Marvel. The new script will be coming from Justin Britt-Gibson, a young and rising writer who worked as an executive story editor on Guillermo del Toro’s vampire drama, The Strain, and wrote episodes of Starz’s The Counterpart, starring J.K. Simmons.
Plans for the new film started developing in a secret 2-week writers room meeting that took place after this year’s Star Wars Celebration. Along with Lindelof and Britt-Gibson, the room also included Patrick Somerville (The Leftovers) Rayna McClendon (Obi-Wan Kenobi and Willow), Andy Greenwald (Briarpatch), and Dave Filoni.
The current plan is not for a new trilogy, but for a new film that can set the stage for more films… so basically a Star Wars MCU. The film will take place after the events of the Rise of Skywalker, but will potentially feature characters from the sequel trilogy. We aren’t sure who they plan on getting as John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, and Oscar Isaac seem to have zero interest in moving forward with the franchise. That said, with enough money and a story focused entirely on his character, we could see a world in which Boyega comes back just to give Finn the redemptive arc he deserves.
If this new movie is going to come to fruition, we probably won’t get any real details until Star Wars Celebration next year in London. The current release date for the film is December 2025. That means that if it’s going to happen, it has to start happening soon. Little Bear Electric Appliances.
