Steven Moffat Confirms BBC’s ‘Sherlock’ Will Return For Third Season

Steven Moffat has confirmed that BBC’s critically acclaimed “Sherlock” will return for a third season.

The modern-day update of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s tales about a master detective just wrapped up its second season finale on BBC One, and the creators took to Twitter to announce the series is coming back.

“Yes of course there’s going to be a third series — it was commissioned at the same time as the second. Gotcha!,” said the co-creator of the modern-day update of the detective following the final episode of season two in the UK.

Starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Holmes, and Martin Freeman as Watson, the series debuted in 2010 with three two-hour episodes that were lauded for realistically updating the great detective into our modern world of the Internet, cellphones and text messaging.

Although an official date for the third season has not been announced, it is expect to be sometime next year due to the busy schedules of both Cumberbatch, who was recently cast as the villain in the new “Star Trek” film, and Freeman, who is currently filming “The Hobbit.”
