Syfy announced Wednesday that the remaining five episodes of the “Battlestar Galactica” prequel are being lifted from the schedule next week and being rescheduled to air in early 2011.
Mark Stern, the Syfy executive in charge of original programming had this to say about the cancellation:
“We appreciate all the support that fans have shown for Caprica and are very proud of the producers, cast, writers and the rest of the amazing team that has been committed to this fine series… Unfortunately, despite its obvious quality, Caprica has not been able to build the audience necessary to justify a second season.”
The cable series pulled in roughly 889,000 viewers in its second season premiere and has been declining since. Shows that nab less than a million typically mean sweet and swift cancellation. Last week, “Caprica” managed to only round up 718,000 viewers.
The cancellation comes less than a week after Syfy announced the development of another Battlestar Galactica prequel. “Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome” will follow a young William Adama fresh out of the academy — and in the 10th year of the first Cylon war.
Network reps declined to comment on whether the producers had enough notice to give the series an ending.
