Talk about counting your chickens before they’ve hatched, Paramount is already betting on the success of J.J. Abrams’ upcoming Star Trek reboot/prequelish-thing and have began making preparations for the inevitable sequel.
Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof have been re-hired to pen the currently unnamed Trek sequel and according to Lindelof, “There’s obviously a lot of hubris involved in signing on to write a sequel of a movie that hasn’t even come out yet. But we’re so excited about the first one that we wanted to proceed.”
The sequel which currently has no story or plot yet, is expected to come out by Summer 2011 and will be dictated by “fan reaction” to the first movie which is largely an origins tale. That means the writers will take the story wherever they feel the fans want it to go.
As of now, only the original writers have been signed onboard. The word is still out (AKA way too early and the first movie hasn’t made any money yet) on whether Abrams will return to direct.
