The first trailer is out for the Netflix movie adaptation of the Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernandez comic book, The Old Guard. In the movie, Charlize Theron leads a team of immortal soldiers who have been working in the shadows throughout time to save the world from itself.
It sounds like it could be pretty fun, even though the idea of immortal soldiers removes a lot of the tension in the story. They try to work around it by pitting the team against a government agency who wants to capture and experiment on them so they can replicate and weaponize the ability to live forever. After the job that Chris Hemsworth just did in Extraction, audiences are teed up for another great action flick on the streaming platform and this looks like it could be exactly what they want.
Joining Theron in the film are Kiki Layne, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Harry Melling, Van Veronica Ngo, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. The Old Guard hits Netflix on July 10th.
Led by a warrior named Andy (Charlize Theron), a covert group of tight-knit mercenaries with a mysterious inability to die have fought to protect the mortal world for centuries. But when the team is recruited to take on an emergency mission and their extraordinary abilities are suddenly exposed, it’s up to Andy and Nile (KiKi Layne), the newest soldier to join their ranks, to help the group eliminate the threat of those who seek to replicate and monetize their power by any means necessary. Based on the acclaimed graphic novel by Greg Rucka and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (LOVE & BASKETBALL, BEYOND THE LIGHTS), THE OLD GUARD is a gritty, grounded, action-packed story that shows living forever is harder than it looks.
