The universe does not seem to want this Akira live-action film to happen. The first good thing we’ve heard about the movie in its nearly decade-long development was that Taika Waititi was going to direct it. However, now that the film has been delayed indefinitely, the New Zealand-based director has signed back on to write and helm the next chapter of the Thor franchise. Before Waititi revitalized the character with Thor: Ragnarok, it had sunk to low enough levels that Chris Hemsworth was ready and willing to bail. Now, Thor has risen to the ranks of one of the most popular Avengers in the MCU and there’s even demand that he co-star in Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3.
With Thor 4 set to hit theaters on May 21, 2021and Akira hitting a wall with script problems, it looks like Warner Bros will just put the Anime adaptation on ice until Waititi’s schedule clears. After all, the only thing better than being able to say your director helmed one MCU Blockbuster is to be able to say that he directed two of them! In the meantime, Waititi’s JoJo Rabbit is set to hit theaters this October with a cast that includes Scarlett Johansson and Sam Rockwell, as well as Rebel Wilson, Stephen Merchant, and Thomasin McKenzie . Don’t be surprised if we get a trailer drop for that one during Comic-Con this week.
