There have been several Star Wars films announced over the last few years, but none of them seem to make it to the production stage. Today at Star Wars Celebration, three new films were announced that are set to cover totally different eras of the Star Wars universe.
While little is known about James Mangold’s early Jedi film, (we’re hoping it is Knights of the Republic), we know that Dave Filoni will be directing a film that ends the current Disney+ Mandoverse, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will be taking us back to Rey’s storyline 15 years after the events of the sequel trilogy.
We are always happy to hear about new Star Wars films, but we can’t help feel a little skeptical given how many Star Wars films and shows have not made it to the filming stage under Kathleen Kennedy in the last few years. Even as recently as a couple of months ago, there was talk of Taika Waititi filming a Star Wars movie this year, but there wasn’t a hint of him or his movie on the stage.
Today during Lucasfilm’s Studio Showcase at Star Wars Celebration Europe 2023, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy announced that three new live-action Star Wars films are on the way. Helming the movies are James Mangold (Logan, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny), Dave Filoni (The Mandalorian, Ahsoka), and Academy Award- and Emmy Award-winning director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel, Saving Face).
James Mangold’s movie will go back to the dawn of the Jedi, while Dave Filoni’s will focus on the New Republic, and close out the interconnected stories told in The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and other Disney+ series. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s film will be set after the events of Rise of Skywalker, and feature Daisy Ridley back as Rey as she builds a new Jedi Order.
