Tim Burton and The Addams Family? Sure why not, it makes perfect sense! Thrilled to hear about the potential? Well you should be. Deadline Hollywood reports that Burton will make a 3D stop-movie based on Charles Addams’ iconic ghastly family.
Illumination Entertainment, the Universal family-film sister unit, has acquired the underlying rights of the Addams drawings. “His intention is to go back to the litany of Addams illustrations that displayed a sharper wit than could be place into a 60s family TV series,” reports Deadline.
This sounds like a project to look forward to especially since it’ll be based off the original less campy cartoons. While it won’t be like Adam West “Batman” compared to “The Dark Knight,” I think it’d be safe to expect Burton’s take to be much darker.
Currently no writer is attached so the project is still in the planning stages. But if I were a betting man, I’d say there’d be a voice acting role somewhere for either Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter.
Originally beginning as a New Yorker illustrated laughing square, The Addams Family were made famous after being adapted into a ’60s horror-comedy show. It found success with its big screen adaptation in the ’90s with “The Addams Family,” which eventually spun the sequel “Adams Family Values” in 1993. The films starred Raul Julia, Anjelica Huston, Christopher Lloyd, and Christina Ricci and were directed by Barry Sonnenfeld (Men in Black).
