According to Variety, Tom Hanks and Mattel are digging even further back into their archives to find old toys to turn into movies. Not content to just make films of Candy Land and Stretch Armstrong, they will now be working with Tom Hanks and Universal Studios to make a live action adaptation of “Major Matt Mason.”
The toy line originated in 1966; Mason led an astronaut team that worked on the moon and lived in a space station. The toy was a hit in the buildup to the first manned moon mission. Mattel retired the line in the 1970s.
Why Tom hanks wants to attach himself to one of the many toy adaptation films is not certain, especially when he’s got Toy Story 3 coming out in the next few years. It could be because of his deep love of all things outer space.
Tom Hanks will next appear on screen in the soon to be summer blockbuster: Angels and Demons.
