It looks like Tom Hardy is going to be playing another comic book baddie. After his infamous turn as Bane for the Batman franchise, it’s just been announced that the actor will be taking on the role of Venom for an upcoming, R-Rated Spider-Man spin-off. In case you were wondering, he’ll be playing the Eddie Brock version of the character and he’ll be under the direction of Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad) for the studio’s first foray into a darker take on their comic book licenses.
We don’t know much more than that about the film at this point, but it is expected to be in theaters on October 5, 2018, so news should start flowing pretty quickly. We also know that this movie will not be connected in any way to the MCU. Until filming begins in the fall, you can see Hardy in his next film, Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk.
This is just one of several spin-offs that SONY has planned for their Spider-Man franchise. Also upcoming is a film based around comic characters Black Cat and Silver Sable.
