Tom Welling shied away from his connection to Superman and Smallville after the original CW DC Heroes show ended. It’s only in the last couple of years that he’s really gotten into talking about his time on the show and appearing at fan conventions with castmates like Michael Rosenbaum and Kristen Kruek. Now it looks like he’s ready to fully embrace the past as it’s been announced that he’ll reprise his role as Clark Kent in the CW Arrowverse Crisis On Infinite Earths crossover event.
Talking about the announcement to Deadline, Producer Marc Guggenheim had this to say:
“For eight years, Arrow has stood on the shoulders of Smallville. Simply put, there would be no Arrow, and no Arrowverse, without it. So when we first started talking about Crisis on Infinite Earths, our first, second and third priorities were getting Tom to reprise his iconic role as Clark Kent. To say that we’re thrilled would be a Superman-sized understatement.”
The addition of Welling to the crossover marks the third Superman set for the show. He’ll be joined by Supergirl castmember Tyler Hoechlin and DC Legends of Tomorrow star Brandon Routh, who will be ditching his Ray Palmer role to reprise his turn as the Man Of Steel from Superman Returns. As far as living supermen, that really only leaves Henry Cavill (that’s not going to happen) and Dean Cain, who has a recurring role on Supergirl as Jeremiah Danvers.
There’s currently no word on whether we can expect to see any other of the original Smallville cast and heroes. While Allison Mack is currently tied up elsewhere, it’s possible to have anyone from Rosenbaum and Erica Durance show up as Lois Lane and Lex Luthor to original heroes like This is Us star Justin Hartley reprising his role as the original CW Green Arrow, Laura Vandervort as Kara Zor-El, or even Alan Ritchson as Arthur Curry/ Aquaman.
