It’s been a few years since MTV had their dark reboot of the 1980’s Michael J Fox hit, Teen Wolf, so it was getting to be around time for someone to reboot the franchise. We just weren’t expecting Pixar to do it with red pandas instead of werewolves.
In Turning red, we follow the adventures of Mei, a girl who is just entering her teen years and is starting to feel certain changes in her body. The only problem is that these aren’t the changes you learn about in health class. These are the kind of changes that turn you into a giant red panda whenever you get upset.
It’s a Pixar movie, so you know that the teen pop vibe of the trailer is just a ruse for a story that is eventually going to rip out your heart and leave you crying in the corner of the room. We’ll see what happens when Turning Red hits theaters on March 11th, 2022.
Disney and Pixar’s “Turning Red” introduces Mei Lee (voice of Rosalie Chiang), a confident, dorky 13-year-old torn between staying her mother’s dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence. Her protective, if not slightly overbearing mother, Ming (voice of Sandra Oh), is never far from her daughter—an unfortunate reality for the teenager. And as if changes to her interests, relationships and body weren’t enough, whenever she gets too excited (which is practically ALWAYS), she “poofs” into a giant red panda! Directed by Academy Award® winner Domee Shi (Pixar short “Bao”) and produced by Lindsey Collins “Turning Red releases on March 11, 2022.
