The update to Twister has been talked about for years, but the movie is happening and production has already wrapped. While talking to Vogue, Glen Powell talked about plans for the movie and what fans of the franchise can expect.
“We’re not trying to recreate the story from the first one,” Powell said. “It’s a completely original story. There are no characters from the original movie back, so it’s not really a continuation. It’s just its own standalone story in the modern day.”
To be honest, that kind of sounds exactly like what a reboot is, but who are we to argue? But Powell went on to say that there is a lot in the theme of the film for moviegoers to sink their teeth into.
“When I was working on Top Gun, [Tom] Cruise brought up a really interesting thing, where he’s like, ‘If you want to make movies of a certain size and scope and scale, you have to figure out what can connect with everyone around the world in every territory. And humans-versus-weather is a very universal idea, how powerless we really are in the face of these cataclysmic forces.”
Personally, we’re a little bummed that Helen Hunt won’t be appearing in the film. Maybe there will be some connection like Powell being the son of Bill Paxton’s character from the first film and he got into storm chasing after he died in a tornado. In real life, Paxton died during a botched heart surgery in 2017. His family settled out of court with the hospital in 2022.
We will see if the new not sequel, not reboot Twister film is any good when it storms into theaters on July 19th, 2024.
