WB Expects ‘Green Lantern 2’ To Be ‘Edgier and Darker’

To say the Warner Bros.’ latest superhero romp “Green Lantern” was a box office flop would be an understatement. Since its debut, the film has grossed only $154 million world wide, while costing $200 millions to make. Despite the poor numbers, the studio is adamant about moving forward with a sequel in 2013, but with some drastic new changes.

In a recent interview with Warner Bros. film group president Jeff Robinov says that he expects the sequel to be edgier and darker.

We had a decent opening so we learned there is an audience. To go forward we need to make it a little edgier and darker with more emphasis on action…. And we have to find a way to balance the time the movie spends in space versus on Earth.

Seems like when in doubt take the rout of Christopher Nolan and the recent Harry Potter films which got darker and edgier with each incarnation. As much as I want to see another “Green Lantern” film, I’m not necessarily sure getting edgier and darker is the answer. It all boils down to the script, and let’s face it, the script for the first film was a disaster.

This doesn’t bold well naturally and I’m not sure what to expect for the sequel as the same creative team (Greg Berlanti, Michael Green and Marc Guggenheim) are all expected to return and work on the sequel. Hasn’t WB learned anything? Heads should have rolled! Why stick to the same team that dropped the ball in the first place?

What are you thoughts about “Green Lantern 2” getting edgier and darker?
