When word first broke about a possible live-action Barbie film, entertainment trades were reporting that comedian Amy Schumer was set in the lead role. We don’t know exactly what the spin was set to be on putting Schumer in the lead of a film about the world’s most anatomically unrealistic girl’s doll, but the internet wasn’t exactly interested in finding out. In the end, she pulled out and was replaced by Anne Hathaway. In the end, it looks like the role will not be going to the ‘Colossal’ star (Seriously, check this film out if you haven’t seen it!). Instead, Variety is reporting that the movie will star Academy Award-nominated actress, Margot Robbie. Along with starring in the film, Robbie will also be producing it with her production company, Luckychap. No director has been named yet, but several sources are suggesting that Wonder Woman director, Patty Jenkins could be at the top of the list.
This is what Robbie had to say about the new role in a statement today:
“Playing with Barbie promotes confidence, curiosity and communication throughout a child’s journey to self-discovery. Over the brand’s almost 60 years, Barbie has empowered kids to imagine themselves in aspirational roles from a princess to president. I’m so honored to take on this role and produce a film that I believe will have a tremendously positive impact on children and audiences worldwide. I can’t imagine better partners than Warner Bros and Mattel to bring this film to the big screen.”
