What Could Have Been: Studio Ghibli’s Three Minute ‘Little Nemo in Slumberland’ Pitch

Some of you may be familiar with the 1989 animated adaptation of the classic Winsor McCay newspaper strip “Little Nemo in Slumberland” which suffered a lengthy period in development hell. But how many of you knew that Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takehata of Studio Ghibli (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke) were also interested in adapting the classic? Unearth today, is a beautiful three minute long test pilot of Studio Ghibli’s “Little Nemo” pitch. It’s a reminder and a tease of what could have been if creative differences and big egos hadn’t gotten in the way.
