Aeon Flux was one of the stand out series that came out of MTV’s liquid television in the 80’s. The futuristic, hyper-stylized animation immediately garnered a cult following that still loves the character despite the Charlize Theron led live-action film adaptation that scored a 9% on Rotten Tomatoes and earned $10 million less at the box office than it cost to make. As far as MTV is concerned, the 13 years that have passed since the last attempt to adapt the franchise to live action is more than enough water under the bridge and they are going to try to bring it back again, but this time as a series.
THR is reporting that the reboot is coming to us by way of Teen Wolf showrunner Jeff Davis and Walking Dead executive producer Gale Anne Hurd. Interestingly, Hurd also produced the Charlize Theron adaptation from 2005. According to the report, the series is “set in a future dystopian state and revolves around a young assassin who teams with a group of biohacking rebels to save humanity as she becomes the hero known as Aeon Flux.”
Here’s an example of an opening from the original series to give you an idea of what MTV is up against when it comes to rebooting Aeon Flux:
