Who says modern comics are worthless? Last Wednesday, the very first issue of Image and Robert Kirman’s zombie drama, “The Walking Dead” No. 1, sold for $10,000 on eBay. The largest sum for a comic book published in the 21st century.
While this may not seem like much, it’s worth noting that back in March, another copy of the same No. 1 book sold for $7,000, and in 2011, it sold for what is now a bargain, of $2,500.
All the No. 1 issues were CGC graded and given a 9.9 out of 10. Rating them a grade of mint or better condition.
“This is an investment as The Walking Dead is now a permanent part of our pop culture and continues to grow in popularity,” touts the comic’s eBay description from the seller, FlyersComics.
Initially debuting to low sales in October 2003, the zombie drama series reportedly had just 7,300 copies printed. According to THR, this helps account for its high value today.
The series has since taken a life of its own. 375,000 copies of the 100th issue sold out on its first day, making it the best-selling comic book issue of the century.
