New Line Cinema recently just inked a deal with Jim Carrey and Jake Gyllenhaal to star in a remake of the classic musical, Damn Yankees (YAY, another remake!).
The 1955 musical which turned into a film in 1958 tells the woeful tale of Joe Boyd (Gyllenhaal) and his unfaltering devotion to his favorite suck-ass baseball team. One day he is offered a deal of a life time by none other than Satan (Carrey) himself who promises him a chance to play for his team and to finally win it all at the cost of his soul.
Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, the snappy duo who brought us the film musical version of Hairspray and a crossdressing John Travolta are behind this remake. New Line have also hired writers Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel to give the story a more contemporary feel, while not deviating too much from the original source material.
All in all, Damn Yankees is sounding like a cross between Hair Spray and Bedazzle but without the foxy Elizabeth Hurley… which makes me a sad Wookie.
