Variety is reporting that MGM has picked a cast for the upcoming Farrelly brothers Three stooges movie. The ink is already dry on Sean Penn’s contract naming him as Larry while negotiations are fully underway with Jim Carrey to play Curly and Benicio Del Toro to play Moe. To fit the role Carrey will apparently not only have to give up his sense of dignity, but also gain forty lbs.
The film is built around the antics of the three characters that Moe Howard, Larry Fine and Curly Howard played in the Columbia Pictures shorts. It is a fairly ambitious task from the Farrelly brothers who made their name on films like Kingpin and Something about Mary and they have been working towards making this film for nearly a decade and three different movie studios.
While Jim Carrey is a veteran when it comes to comedy, this is Del Toro’s first funny film since Snatch, and Sean Penn’s first attempt at making people laugh since the craptastic remake of We’re no Angels with Robert Deniro.
