Cloth Made From Old Cassette Tapes Could Be Next Hipster Must-Have

Over the last couple of years, hipsters have been enamored with cassette tapes. They were never really great when it came to sound and they were super fragile, but they make for the perfect thing to like ironically while it collects dust in your apartment. Now, an artist in Singapore has found a use for the miles and miles of magnetic tape in the cassettes by weaving them into a fabric that can be used to make clothing and accessories.

The material is called MusicCloth and she’s been working on it since launching a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2016. On the upside, there doesn’t seem to be a shortage of cassettes to use for her work, and every cassette she transforms is one less that ends up in a landfill (for now). On the downside, handweaving magnetic tape is a laborious task so you can bet that anything made with MusicCloth is going to cost a lot more than buying the actual cassettes yourself.

It seems like the material is currently being most commonly used to make handbags, wallets, and purses. That said, there are some examples of it being used to make clothing and there is no way that could be comfortable.
